I am a new piggie owner of one week now. (I have two little piggies) Patches and Peanut. When my husband and I get them out nightly and pet them and show them affection, they wheek. It sounds like they are in distress or something. Are they still scared of us, or are they accepting us as their parents. I don't want my little babies to be uncomfortable or scared. It's not like a shriek, it's more like a soft wheek. Also...when I do their spot cleaning daily, they both get in the pigloo, and make a flutter sound. Can someone tell me what that means? I am just new to all of this, and love my babies and want to know more from you wonderful people.

I'm not a guinea pig expert (no where near it at all!!) but since you've only had them for a week, they just seem a little scared of you because you've never had them before. What I do with rabbits, is I slowly introduce them. Just slowly get to know them. Just feed them and don't interact all day. Then the next day, get them out but don't touch them, talk to them, etc... (but still feed them of course, and cleaning) And little by little if you just sit on the floor with something relaxing (tv, a book, etc...) they will probably come to you more and more and you can start giving pets and treats and stuff. It's just one of many methods. Good luck with your piggies! Btw, welcome to the forum!

Hi I've got 8 guinea-pigs and my guinea-pigs all did this when I first got them, I think most guiena-pigs do. I agree with Hannah it does sound like your guinea-pigs are just a bit scared of you. If you stroke them whilst they are still in their cage at first, it will relax them more and over a few weeks they'll probably trust you more and won't be scared of you, so you'll be able to pick them up. If you hold them every day they should be very tame and friendly in a few months time. I hope that helps

I've had my pig for a few months and she sometimes does that fluttering sound. I think the wheeking can be a good thing though. This is a good site to listen to the different guinea pig sounds and maybe you'll recognize some. Dont worry your pigs will come around soon enough. When I first got mine she was a little mean but now shes so sweet. Like Hannah said, sometimes i just sit next to her in her playpen and watch tv, she'll start running all around and hop in my lap. Just takes time. www.jackiesguineapiggies.com/guineapigsounds.html

Some guinea pigs wheek anyway even if they are used to you. I have two guinea pigs, Jiggly and Puffy. Puffy wheeks everytime when I pick her up but Jiggly couldn't care less. I suppose it depends on their personality.

Hi (: I own 4 guinea pigs, 2 sows and 2 boars, and in general (unless they are just naturally adapt to human- which would be rare) they will freak a bit when they first move. (Also keep a close eye on their fur because the stress of moving can cause them to get mites which are much, much, much better treated sooner rather than later.) But dont be offended if they still do this even months down the road, some piggies are just squirmers and squeakers. And usually they'll settle down after you pick them up, but not in the process of picking them up haha (: ;D <----cute!
